The pandemic has been very unpredictable and the day before Kris and I were set to leave for a long overdue trip to Mexico, the Canadian government reinstated the “avoid all non-essential travel” advisory.
How do you travel to all of these amazing places? It is all about setting your priorities!! This is my answer to the many questions that I am asked: How do you travel so much? How can you afford it? You must have a lot of money! Travel is a priority in my life, it is something I could never imagine my life without. Contrary to popular belief of people who travel, I am not rich! One day, how I viewed money and what I spent my money on changed, there was a shift in my mind and I started putting travel first.

Welcome to the BELLAGIO ✨ One of the most well known luxury hotels on the Las Vegas strip is the @bellagio The Bellagio hotel has undergone a $110-million dollar renovation and we were able to get a sneak peek at the brand new Salone Suite located in the spa tower. The suite is beautifully decorated with amazing views of the strip and the pools below. The hotel wanted to keep its luxury Italian charm but incorporate a more modern and neutral look which they definately managed to do! As soon as we walked into the first renovated room, I said that it felt luxurious but also comfortable and like I was at home. Working from my hotel room around the world has really made me second guess my hotel and room choices. There is nothing like sitting in my fluffy white robe at a desk with a nice view and the Bellagio definately delivers that. The rooms and suites are not the only reason to pick this stunning hotel however. Heading to the pools transforms you to the Italian countryside, complete with the famous Cyprus trees. Top 3 mistakes I see NEW travel agents make 🔴 Being a travel agent is not as easy as some people make it seem online, it can be a lot of work and there are many things to learn BUT if you are ready to make a change and travel the world 👇🏼 Don’t make these 3 mistakes if you are thinking about (or have started your journey to) becoming a travel agent: ✨ Not niching down - This is something I really struggled with because I always thought - if I focus on a specific niche, I will lose out on other opportunities. While this can be true in the short term, it will be majorly beneficial in the long run. What does niche down mean? You can’t specialize in every type of travel in every destination for every type of traveler- so figure out what type of travel, what destinations or what type of traveler you enjoy learning about and focus on those. ✨ Not using social media OR using it as a travel diary - Social media is an extremely powerful tool, especially being a travel agent. In my opinion and experience, social media has been a detrimental part of my business and has gained me new clients that I may not have met otherwise. ALSO, social media can open other doors to SO MANY opportunities if you want to diversify your business (more on this later!) ✨ Not investing in YOU - I am going to be honest here, there is a BUNCH you need to know before you can even begin to become a successful travel agent. You NEED to invest in yourself - which can mean different things for different agents. One thing that is true for ALL agents, no matter how you want to run your business, is that you need to LEARN, learn and then learn some more! Also, travel! Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens 🦋 Have you ever been to the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens in Las Vegas? If you have not, I highly recommend adding it to your list of things to do while in Las Vegas. We were lucky enough to be at the Bellagio Hotel the day that they were unveiling the “Tea & Tulips” theme in the conservatory. I have never seen a display so beautiful! As soon as you stepped foot into the gardens you were transformed into what felt like a fairytale. The decor was some of the most amazing that I have ever seen - giant tea pots filling up their matching tea cups below and a hot air balloon with a girl laying on a crescent moon floating above us. I didn’t know where to look first. The music that filled the background was something out of Alice in Wonderland, a magical melody that filled the entire conservatory. Entrance to this amazing display is completely free and each season brings a new theme and new decor. An adults only MUST stay hotel in Playa Mujeres 🇲🇽 As I travel more I have noticed that my room and having a terrace with a nice view have become more important to me. Maybe it is because while we travel we have work time as well, so having a nice room and a terrace with a beautiful view makes for a nice workspace atmosphere. SCUBA DIVING 🤿 Scuba diving has been on my bucket-list for years but I had always been too afraid to make the commitment and go. When Kris found an excursion with @ahascubadiving where we could learn about scuba diving and do 2 shallow dives with a professional diver without having to first get our PADI, I was excited. I was nervous to go through the full certification and then realize that I was not able to scuba dive (claustrophobia!). So a taste of what it would be like first was exactly what I needed. Our diving instructor Lorena was incredible! She took us through some safety training on land and then in the pool to make sure we were ready for the ocean. Safety was her main concern and making sure that we were comfortable and knew exactly what to do in certain situations ie. if you get water in your regulator. I was worried at first but after meeting Lorena, she put all my worries at ease! It was an incredible experience and I am so glad that I worked up the courage to do it. If you are a new or experienced diver I highly recommend diving with Lorena and her team! We cannot wait to dive with them again! It still feels like a dream that I am able to check things off of my bucket-list and have these life changing experiences as part of my work. Top things to do in Tulum 🌴 Visit a cenote - Tulum is surrounded by countless cenotes to choose from, some close to Tulum’s centre and some stretch out as far as Valladolid, where the famous Cenote Suytun is located Visit the ruins - The Tulum ruins are a stunning sight sitting on top of a cliff with the ocean as a backdrop. You can also venture out and visit Ek Balam or the Coba ruins! Eat! - There are so many food options in Tulum to choose from, my recommendation would be Pepe’s Best Taco food truck. Every day there was a long lineup to get a taste of these delicious tacos. They were some of the best I’ve had - there was a mango salsa on top that was so delicious! Explore the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve - If you want to head out of the centre of Tulum, this reserve is a tropical paradise where you can explore the Muyil ruins, swim in cenotes or relax on the beaches. There is also a wide variety of wildlife! If you want to unplug a little bit from the hustle and bustle of Tulum, you can opt to stay at the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve and soak up the beauty! Go to a festival in the jungle - This is not something we normally do, but we were glad we went! Relax on the beach - One of the most beautiful beaches in Tulum is Playa Paraiso which is also where the famous slanted palm trees are. If you are staying in downtown Tulum and want to go to the beach, be prepared to pay a hefty fare if you do not have a rental. There is no uber in Tulum and the taxis were charging $60.00 per direction! Take a cooking class - there are some amazing cooking classes that offer traditional experiences where you can visit a Mayan village and learn to cook local delicacies. Dive in a cenote - Imagine exploring the underwater world of a cenote! You must be dive certified in order to dive the cenotes. Swim with whale sharks - another bucketlist experience! Happy Valentine’s Day! ♥️ When I met my husband almost 6 years ago I was struggling to build my travel business and working as a server to make ends meet. He had only ever been to Mexico and the Dominican Republic and I had been traveling all over the world and was on my way to explore Jordan & Israel. When I returned, we started our life together and made big plans to build a successful travel business and explore as many places as we could. The last 6 years have taken us all over the globe and we have had some incredible adventures, some of the places we have been are: Morocco - We did a tour through Morocco where we hiked through the Atlas Mountains, explored Chefchaouen and wandered through Fes, Meknes, Volubilis, Marrakech & Rabat. Ecuador - We spent 16 days traveling through Ecuador and the Amazon jungle - if you haven’t been to the Amazon, you should definitely go, it was one of the most beautiful places! Uganda - We had a once in a life time experience in Uganda when we went trekking with the gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The scenery in Uganda was also jaw dropping! Tanzania - Watching baby lions run around together and roar was one of the most incredible things we have seen. We saw so much wildlife in Tanzania, it was a bucket list trip! Thailand - We spent a month traveling through Thailand traveling slower than we normally do and it was incredible! Japan - We had a quick stop in Tokyo on our way home from Thailand, we saw as much as we could but it definitely made us want to return and see so much more. France - France will always be a special place for us, it was our first country in Europe together and where Kris proposed! Mexico - We have been to Mexico multiple times and it is one of our favourite places and it is where we went scuba diving for the first time! Without him our business would not be what it is today and I am so thankful for that serving job that I had years ago that brought us together and allowed us to live the life of our dreams! Do you dream about traveling the world? 🌍 For me, since I was 19 years old I dreamt about traveling the world. But my heart and my head were always in a constant battle and I felt like I had to follow the same path that everyone I knew was on - go to school, get a corporate job and climb the ladder. In the beginning it all felt so exciting - I finished school and got a job at one of the top law firms in Toronto. I always dreamt my life would end up like an episode of suits - one day I would move to New York City and work in the legal field. Things slowly started to feel like this wasn’t where I was meant to be, my heart was saying I was meant to travel but my head saying I was meant to work my way up. Fast forward to now, I could not imagine what my life would look like if I didn’t decide almost 10 years ago to leave my secure job and start a whole new path in the travel industry. That is the funny thing about life though, the things that scare us the most and that push us out of our comfort zone are usually the things that change our path forever. Now instead of sitting in my office on the 23rd floor daydreaming about traveling and watching the clock tick - I am exploring the world with my husband and doing things I never dreamt would be possible. Building my travel business as a travel agent has given us the freedom to travel the world and still make money along the way. It is how we left for over a month in February to travel around Thailand, how we are able to book our travel around our schedule - not our work schedule and how we get to meet amazing people from around the globe and travel with them. Travel memories ✈️ The other day I was looking back at old travel photos and I started thinking about past trips and what my life was like before travel. It is amazing to me how much travel has changed my life in every single way and it got me thinking, what trips had a large impact on me? One of the most BEAUTIFUL hotels I have been to ✨ The Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets is one of the most stunning hotels I have been to - it is a brand new resort that opened in May 2024. The design of the hotel is perfect for a romantic vacation with tiered pools throughout the resort, some like a hidden oasis tucked away in the foliage. As you lounge in the pools, the staff come by to see if you need anything. We were offered cocktails and a full lunch without ever having to leave the pool. The beach is beautiful and is surrounded by piers that have loungers and hammocks to relax in. I was impressed with every aspect of this hotel, from the layout to the rooms, the food and the spa. My heart raced at the thought of being under water and trying to breathe through the regulator - I am claustrophobic and as soon as I started thinking about being deep under the oceans surface that was the end of planning my trip. When we were planning our most recent trip to Mexico, Kris stumbled across a diving company that allowed you to do shallow dives without first getting your PADI. A professional diver was right with you the whole time and went through safety training on land and in the pool beforehand. I was nervous as diving is amazing but knew it could be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. We decided to try it, if I panicked then I would know diving wasn’t for me. And I admit, I panicked in the pool a bit but I told myself - just breathe. When we got into the ocean, it was a completely different feeling and a whole new world opened up. Our first dive was the MUSA underwater museum which is a bunch of sculptures on the ocean floor that encourage coral growth. The other was the Manchones Coral Reef where we swam with colourful fish, lobsters and crabs. It was one of the most peaceful and incredible things I have ever experienced! If I had let fear continue to take over I never would have checked diving off on my bucket list and I wouldn’t be planning our next dive and getting our PADI. We have done some amazing things over the years around the world, but diving was one of our top experiences (in the ocean!). Top things to do in Isla Mujeres 🌊 Rent a golf cart - This is the most popular way to get around Isla Mujeres. The island is small, and takes around 45 minutes or so to do a complete loop, however there are so many places to stop and visit, eat or take in the views. Swim at one of the beaches - Playa Norte is one of the most beautiful beaches in Isla Mujeres and is not far off of the main shopping strip. There are loungers and umbrellas to rent for 500 pesos, or you can grab a spot at one of the restaurants. Visit Punta Sur Park - Head to this eco-park to see Temple Ixchel which honours the Mayan goddess of fertility. You can also walk along the coastline which is full of rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean. Snorkel - There are a few areas that you can go snorkelling around the island. The MUSA Underwater Museum is full of unique underwater sculptures, such as a beetle car, a man standing with a dog asleep at his feet and many other unique statues. This is where we went scuba diving! You can also snorkel at El Farito where you can see coral and many colourful fish. Shopping - When you step out of the Marina, you will be met with countless shops and restaurants. There are so many places to choose from - the streets are full of beautiful purses, hats and dresses. One thing to note is the jewellery stores - some of these shops sell what look like stunning, real pieces - however they are fake, usually cut from glass so be careful! How to get to Isla Mujeres? By ferry - The ferry runs every half an hour from different marinas - we left from Puerto Juarez, and our ride was about 25 minutes. The cost is dependant on what marina you are coming from - our tickets from Puerto Juarez were 270 Mexican pesos per direction. Tour - years ago we did a tour that included snorkelling and a visit to Isla Mujeres. We only had 2 hours to explore so we visited the island twice when we came back! Private boat - we took a private catamaran to the Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets - you can also charter any type of boat to take you to the island and main marina. Top 3 things we did near Cancun 🌴 Mexico is one of my favourite countries to visit, I have been at least 8 times, and plan on visiting many more! Although I do enjoy an all-inclusive here and there, I love to get off the resort and explore the surrounding area. If you are heading to the Cancun area, here are the top 3 things that we did while we were there: Scuba Diving - This has been on my bucket-list for years but I was always afraid of panicking while underwater. I admit, I did panic a little bit in the pool when we were going through our safety training BUT once I jumped into the ocean, all of the worry immediately went away. This was definitely one of the most incredible things I have done (ocean-wise) and I am hooked - currently planning our next dive! Sailing on a private catamaran - This was a dream - we were picked up at the Marina Hacienda del Mar and whisked away to a new luxury hotel on Isla Mujeres (more on that later!). We had the whole catamaran to ourselves and a wonderful crew. We have been on many catamaran’s in the past but having one all to yourself as you sail through the ocean is pretty special! Visiting Isla Mujeres - This was our second time to the island (and we visited twice during our stay!) and I would definitely return. The island has a laid back feel, with countless shops, bars & restaurants. The most common way to get around is by golf cart, you can drive the whole island in about 45 minutes or so, depending on how many stops you make. Where to stay in Tulum 🌴 If you are heading to Tulum and want a unique hotel that is an instagram dream - you have to stay at the @xkebantulum Adding Tulum onto our Mexico itinerary was a bit last minute so I did not have much time or many options. I found the Xkeban hotel and booked it as it had great reviews. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised by how beautiful, well decorated and unique this hotel was. There are so many small details in the decor that really make this hotel special. And the decor is not the only thing that was fantastic, the people, food and service was impeccable. The staff were so friendly and could not do enough for us. You can tell that the food and drinks are prepared to be not only delicious but also aesthetically pleasing. The Xkeban is an adults only hotel with a rooftop bar, lounge and infinity pool, as well as a one of a kind snake dj booth. The location was great for us as it was just outside of the hustle and bustle of some of Tulum’s shops and restaurants but within walking distance to many options for food, drinks, shopping and a cappuccino. There are also many events that take place at the hotel, we were able to see some dj’s play but they also host events like tarot card reading and fashion shows! Take the trip ✈️ You never know where life is going to take you. If life has taught me anything over the last few years, it is that things can change in the blink of an eye. I have found myself saying “I’ll go next year” or “I want to save more before I go to this destination” or whatever else I can think of to not do something but when I started having issues with my breathing, all of those reasons blurred into the background. I do not share too much about my personal life, but I think sometimes we get so lost in our daily routine that we need a reminder to slow down and make time to do the things that make us happy. I thought it was just my allergies for the longest time, but when things got progressively worse - I finally went to the doctor and had a breathing test done. My doctor told me that my breathing is restricted - they do not know why and that I need to go and see a specialist. Fear grabbed hold of me and everything that I wanted to do that required healthy lungs began to flash through my mind: Hiking to the Lost City in Colombia Learning to Scuba Dive Trekking overnight to Acatenango Volcano in Guatemala Hiking Mount Yasur in Vanuatu Instant regret - Why did I not do the things I wanted to do? What if I missed my chance? The moral of my story is - don’t wait! If there is a trip you want to take but you find yourself coming up with reasons as to why you shouldn’t or why you should wait - don’t listen to them! I have never once looked back and thought - I wish I never took that trip or I wish I saved the money and never had that experience. The only regrets I have are looking back and WISHING I had taken the trip or experienced certain things. Don’t wait to chase your dreams! Travel has my heart ♥️ There is something special about traveling. The excitement of exploring somewhere new, or returning to your favourite place; experiencing a new culture or breaking out of your comfort zone and trying something you have always wanted to do. My family always jokes that they do not know where my intense passion for travel came from. We didn’t travel much and the first time I went on a plane was when I was 19 and we went to Mexico as a family. I started thinking about how I could have gone from building a career in the legal field to becoming an international travel agent - and I realized that it came from my grandad. My grandad worked as a buyer for a clothing store for most of his life and throughout my childhood, he would tell me all about his adventures. From running around with my grandma collecting samples across Italy, France, Vietnam and Pakistan to living part of his life in the Philippines. He would tell me stories about boarding a big Cathay Pacific flight and flying business class around the world. And just like that, one day the pull of the unknown got ahold of me and I left my legal career to pursue my dreams. My first big trip was to Vietnam and I flew Cathay Pacific, like my grandad had all those years ago - although my previous trips to the Caribbean had fuelled my desire to travel, there was something about Vietnam that changed me. I wouldn’t believe you… What if someone told you that everything you ever dreamt about could be a reality. Would you believe them? 10 years ago I sat at my desk in a high-rise in Toronto, pouring over legal documents. Every so often I would look out the window and think; is there more for me out there? If someone had told me that I would be traveling on an all expenses paid trip to the French Alps, courtesy of @delta and @clubmed to experience their products so that I could recommend them to clients, I would have laughed. If someone told me that one day I would run my own travel business and be an international travel agent; that I would travel the world, see things and have experiences that most people only dream about and create long lasting business partnerships and friendships with people from across the globe - I wouldn’t have believed it. But here I am, and you could be following your dreams too! It can be so scary to start out, but you will never know what you are capable of or what opportunities you could have if you never start. I have said it before, and I will say it again - the best and scariest decision I ever made was leaving behind the security of a salary, benefits & a pension to pursue what my heart told me was the right path. You do not need to jump in head first and leave it all behind like I did, because I worked in other areas as well after leaving my corporate job to make ends meet. Keep the job that is paying your bills while you build your dream life in your spare time. Do this until you are ready to pursue your dream full time! Imagine this… It’s Thursday morning and you have just boarded a luxury catamaran in Thailand. The wind blows through your hair, sun shining on your face as you set sail across the ocean. Put the guidebook away! 📖 Sometimes the most magical moments that you have are when you are wandering aimlessly in a new place and you get lost. Top 3 recommendations to start your journey to becoming a Travel Agent ✈️ Have you been dreaming about being able to leave your job and travel the world but you are unsure of how to do it. Leaving a secure job with a guaranteed pay cheque is hard but do you know what is even harder? Not living your dreams and building a life that you love! Pick the proper host company for your business - This is so important! You need to understand what level of support you will need and what is important to you. My host company supplies the systems and accounting support that I need in order to run my business. Happy Global Travel Agent Day! ✈️🌍♥️ Today we celebrate our industry and all of our accomplishments. It has been a rough few years but we pulled together, supported each other and we have come back stronger than before! Before becoming a travel agent, I was working in the legal field and felt lost. I knew I was meant to be doing something else and I could not shake that feeling. In 2014 I decided that sitting in an office in Toronto working for lawyers was not what I wanted. I took a leap and completely changed my career path. I left the legal world behind and walked into an office with bright red carpet, magazines with photos of destinations splashed across the covers and a huge map of the world across the wall - and I have never looked back. Being a TA is not a job; it is a lifestyle. I wake up thinking about travel and go to sleep thinking about travel! I could not imagine myself doing anything else. It can be a tough job at times, but when I look back at everything I have been lucky enough to experience, every moment of stress is worth it. Curating the perfect vacation for someone and then hearing about how much they loved it when they return is one of the biggest reasons that I do what I do. Having a deep love of travel and being able to share that with others is amazing. Agents put their heart and soul into their clients vacations and many people do not see behind the scenes of what it really takes to ensure a clients adventure is one to remember. Seanery Luxury Boat Tours 🛥️ 📍 Phuket, Thailand One of Kris and I’s favourite things to do is to be on the ocean, so booking a boating excursion is a must on most of our trips. Having been a travel agent for almost 9 years now, I have had my fair share of excursion experiences; however not all suppliers that provide excursions operate at the same level. @seaneryphuket was phenomenal in every way! The captain and staff were super friendly, engaging and knowledgable. Every little detail was carefully crafted to ensure that passengers were safe and enjoying their trip. We decided to do both of our tours with Seanery; we took their speed boat catamaran to Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Phi Phi Don and Maya Beach, passing by Maiton Island while enjoying the sunset. Two days later we took their larger luxury catamaran (complete with DJ, dance floor and bar) to Naka Island, Hong Island and James Bond Island. Not only were the boats and service luxurious, but Seanery took us to areas at different times then a lot of the other tours to try to avoid as much of the crowds as possible. One of the things I really liked was when we were at Maya Beach and tons of travelers were waiting in lines to get down to the dock to board their boats, we were escorted past everything and able to board right away and carry on to the next adventure. This was a very nice touch and maximized our time! I would highly recommend traveling with Seanery! I am celebrating✨🥂 As you may have seen, I reached a huge milestone in my business last month. I was able to generate what I made ALL of last year - in ONE month! I never thought that I would be in this position. I feel that there is so much in this world that generates fear and pushes us away from living out our dreams, taking risks and building businesses. It pushes us towards working for a company for our whole life and begging for those few weeks off a year to jet set across the globe. I have fallen for that more times than I can count! I would feel confident in myself and want to pursue my travel business full time, and then these little voices all around me would say that I needed the security of a full time job to back me up and I can work on my “dream project” in my spare time. That is how it felt for so long - a dream. But I finally silenced all of those voices and focused solely on my business and it finally all paid off! In addition to hitting a milestone: I was invited on an all expenses paid trip to the French Alps to experience new products so I can sell them efficiently I am hiring! Having the ability to bring someone on my team so that I can focus on growing my business more and take on new and exciting ventures which is something I have wanted for a while I have been invited to exclusive events for travel agents that I never have before because I was worried about being secure rather than focusing on my true passion and building my travel business I am telling you all of this because I know how it feels to have a dream; one that is so strong you can’t stop thinking about it but having a strong sense of fear about it at the same time. “Everything you have ever wanted is on the other side of fear” Have you dreamt about traveling the world and having the ability to generate an income while sipping an aperol spritz in Positano? A glimpse into the life of a travel agent 👩🏼💻 Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a travel agent is like? When I am traveling, things look a bit differently (obviously!) but when I am at home a typical day can look like this: - Going through my calendar and prioritizing things that need to be done that day - Connecting with clients about quotes, upcoming trips and questions - Connecting with suppliers about client trips, industry news and pretty much anything and everything! - Updating social media calendars - Participating in training (we are always learning something new!) - Troubleshooting if anything arises like delayed or cancelled flights - Admin work (which I won’t be doing for much longer 👀 ) - Planning my own travel (I am doing this all the time, I find something amazing for a client and add it to my list, I cannot help myself!) - And then there are the times when you are doing all of this but from across the globe! No day is the same, I am always looking into new destinations, hotels, tours and any other aspect of travel that a client may be interested in, or that is up and coming or off the beaten path. Take a break 🌸 When you’re caught in the craziness of everyday life, the good things that nurture a relationship can start falling lower on the priority list. We get so caught up in the routine of going to work, making sure the bills are paid, keeping track of appointments, trying to have a social life, working out… the list goes on. Traveling gives you the opportunity to start putting your relationship first again and to remember all of the great things you’ve accomplished together. This is part of why I love travel! I notice when I have been home for a while that I fall into that routine of everyday life. Then, all of a sudden I am in the Serengeti watching baby lions drink from a river with their mom and I look at my husband and remember how unbelievably amazing life is and how grateful I am that I get to experience those moments and this life with him! These moments make all of the nitty gritty work and chores in our daily lives disappear and I am left with just the two of us. Nothing helps to refresh your perspective and relationship quite like jetting off to somewhere new to reconnect. I am such a strong believer in this; whether your time together is in an over water villa in Bora Bora, enjoying the sunset over the ocean from your private plunge pool, or you are hiking the remote volcano, Mount Yasur, in Vanuatu. Whatever your dreams are; pulling away from grind and spending that time together and experiencing those moments is a game changer. What is a Travel Agent? 👩🏼💻 Since I speak about being a travel agent often and share my adventures around the globe, I thought I would talk about what a travel agent actually does, other than plan and book travel! So anyone who is thinking of using a travel agent for their dream getaway, or anyone who is thinking of becoming one themselves, stop scrolling! 📌 The simple answer is lots of things, but today, I’m giving you the shortlist - travel agents: ☆ Build connections and relationships with suppliers around the world and vet them to ensure that our clients experience will be incredible - this is done through in depth training, networking events or experiencing the products and destinations first hand ☆ Constantly keep up to date on travel trends - be it a new hotel, a new airline, an up and coming destination, a special event taking place , hidden gems- pretty much everything travel related! ☆ Are training - constantly. What do you dream about? ✨ When I was younger, I dreamt about working in the legal field for the rest of my life. I went to school, graduated, began working in law firms in Toronto and trying to build a life for myself. BUT something started to feel off; I didn’t feel the way I was told I would when I continued to check off those milestones we are all told to hit. Honestly, I began to feel trapped, like I was living a life that wasn’t meant for me. I loved travel, I hadn’t done much of it, but the places I had explored sparked something in my soul that the office just never did. Fast forward 8+ years and I run my own travel business and can travel the world whenever I want (most times at a discount, sometimes even for free!). Making the change from the legal field to the travel industry wasn’t that hard of a decision for me, it was actually incredible exciting! I started with Flight Centre in one of their retail shops and had a salary with commissions, benefits and a pension, so things were pretty stable. In 2017, I had the opportunity to leave all of that behind, all of the security and run my own business as a Travel Agent. The thoughts of a stable income swirled through my mind but in the end, I knew it was the right move for me. And so I handed in my resignation as a full time TA and started my new journey, almost immediately flying to Panama and Colombia to celebrate my new found freedom. I am telling you all of this because this is possible for you too! I receive messages about people wondering about becoming a TA, but they are unsure if they want to take the leap. I get that, it is scary, really scary as we live in a more unstable world (in my opinion) now then we used to. BUT if you take an informed leap, if you know what you are getting into, what you need to do, how much work it really is, and you have a clear vision of what you want - then you can do anything! Why you NEED to stay in Railay Bay 🌊 When I began searching for the perfect places for Kris and I to explore throughout Thailand, one of the main things I looked for was the best beaches. We love the ocean, so a swimmable, beautiful beach is a must for us on most of our trips! Railay Bay West was coming in at the top of the beaches surrounding Krabi, so I booked our stay there. Railay Bay is a dream; surrounded by towering limestone karsts, this area is cut off from the rest of Krabi and is only accessible by boat. There are no cars on Railay Bay and it is a very laid back beach town vibe, which is exactly what we were looking for! Our days here were spent swimming in the ocean and wandering around the beach town, sampling all of the delicious food they had to offer. We also had the privilege of visiting the most luxurious hotel in the area, @rayavadee.krabi This hotel is unreal. The jungle like setting throughout its 26 acres is home too many species, including monkeys. I got to see a monkey swimming along in one of the many pools of water along the property, which I have never seen before! Rayavadee also has access to 3 beaches, my favourite being Phra Nang Beach. Railey Bay is beautiful, but has a lot of long-tail boats and daily visitors. Phra Nang Beach is only accessible by walking through an amazing cave trail and does not allow boats access. They also have the Grotto Restaurant where you can watch the sunset over the ocean, nestled under a limestone cliff. Aside from the sheer beauty of this hotel, they also have a huge focus in sustainability and protecting the environment around them, which is another reason to love this property! Life of an Independent Travel Agent 👩🏼💻 I have been thinking about sharing my journey as a Travel Agent and what it is really like for a while now, I have had many people ask me questions about getting started and what it is really like. I recently met an amazing woman while sailing on a catamaran in Thailand and we talked for hours about her interest in being a TA and what it was like. I realized that when I started my journey, there was wayyy less choice for how to begin. Now there are hundreds of host companies to choose from, you have to figure out what to focus on, how to get training, if you should work under an established agent and all of the other decisions that need to be made. Hey! 👋 I’m Kayla, nice to meet you! I figured it was time to reintroduce myself as there are some new faces here! I have been in the travel industry for almost 9 years now, starting my journey working in a retail shop for Flight Centre as a Travel Agent in 2014. I didn’t always work in the travel industry though; I went to school to study to become a paralegal, I knew that I wanted to be in the legal field ever since I was in high school. I dreamt of graduating as a paralegal and one day, attending law school and moving to Manhattan to live out my dreams. After graduating, I scored a job at a law firm in Toronto and I thought, this is it! I dressed the part, running around Toronto in my pencil dresses and heels, but something started to feel off. 💃🏼 That was the last time I worked in Toronto for a law firm. A friend of a friend worked for Flight Centre and I reached out to them to see what qualifications I needed in order to apply. Fast forward almost 9 years later and I run my own travel business called Travel Agent without Borders! It has been a wild ride, with many failures and successes, and I have experienced things and traveled to destinations that I thought I would only ever dream about. I have shared bits and pieces of my journey of being a Travel Agent, but have never really dove into it. Many people throughout the years, especially recently, have reached out to me about how they too can become a Travel Agent and live out their dreams. So I thought that I would incorporate this into what I share! I will still showcase the beautiful destinations that I visit, as well as travel tips but I will also start sharing how I got here, and how you can too! If I can help anyone who is on the fence about taking that leap of faith (granted it is the right leap for them to take), I want to be apart of that. Temples in Bangkok✨ 📍Wat Arun & Wat Pho There are some things in destinations that are “touristy” and some travelers avoid in search of more off the beaten path gems. Wat Arun and Wat Pho are very well known, but missing these incredible temples would be a huge mistake! The intricate detail and sheer beauty that you encounter at both temple grounds is breathtaking. We spent most of our day exploring the two areas, which you can either drive between or catch the ferry. Thailand 🇹🇭 We are not even half way through our month long trip around Thailand and I am already in love! Our first stop: Bangkok ✨ I searched online for must see places in Bangkok and how much time we should spend there as I have never been. Most said 2 to 4 days was enough. So we planned 5 days to deal with jet lag (it always hits me no matter what I do) and to sightsee, and then one day on the way back before flying to Tokyo. I wish we had more time! I LOVED Bangkok and the surrounding area. There is so much to do! Our first trip was to the Sanctuary of Truth. If you have not heard of this museum in Pattaya, you have to check it out! The photos and videos do not do it justice, it is wildly majestic! The Sanctuary of Truth has been under construction since 1981 and still has a ways to go. You can see the locals hand carving the structure and it is amazing to witness! Uganda 🇺🇬 You never really know a place until you hop on a plane and experience it for yourself. Sometimes words cannot express the feeling that you get when you explore a new destination, experience the culture and meet the locals. Our journey through Uganda was incredible, surprising, emotional and captivating. My new blog about our time in Uganda as a whole is now posted! There is something magical about travel ✨ I first fell in love with travel with I was 19 year old. To me, there is nothing like it in the world. The experiences that I have been so lucky to have and the memories that I hold in my head and heart will last a lifetime! I have fallen in love with many places over the years, some more than others, but there is nothing that would prepare me for the love I felt in Uganda. Everyone knows about the incredible opportunity to see the gorillas in their natural habitat; but I don’t think the videos and photos can prepare you for what this experience is truly like in real life What is less known, is all of the other amazing things can be explored in this diverse country. Something I was not aware of was the intensely stunning scenery that can be found anywhere that you look. After our trek with the gorilla’s, we drove through the mountains and I couldn’t believe my eyes! The food was another highlight, it was so fresh and delicious. Our guide from @pearlnatureholidays told us that every single thing that you eat in Uganda is fresh, they do not eat anything that isn’t; and let me me tell you, you can taste the difference! There are so many different questions that you can ask yourself to determine this and it is really important to know your travel style when you are looking to book travel! I, for example, am the type of traveler who loves adventure and getting out in the jungle or city to explore but, I also need to have a beautiful beach with a swimmable ocean to relax at when I want to. Countdown 🎉 I can’t believe we are counting down the last few weeks of 2022! You never really realize how fast time flies until you stop and look around. I am so thankful for everything that 2022 has brought, including the health and happiness of my friends and family, the ability to experience a once in a lifetime trip to Uganda & Tanzania and the continued growth of my travel business. 2022 was an amazing year ✨ This year I was lucky enough to check some of the biggest items off of my bucketlist; trekking with silverback gorillas in Uganda and witnessing animals roaming free in the Serengeti, as well as the great wildebeest migration in Tanzania. As the year comes to a close, and our new adventures in 2023 inch closer, I could not be more thankful for the experiences that I have had, the people who continue to support me and the people that I have met. Sometimes you just need that light at the end of the tunnel ✨ Anyone who knows me, knows that travel encompasses every aspect of my life. I believe that it is one of the most amazing experiences in life, to take a leap and travel to another country, intertwine your life with another culture, meet people and share experiences together. ZANZIBAR 🌴 What to do and eat in Zanzibar: This destination needs no introduction, but it’s worth all the hype. But how can you decide what to do and eat in Zanzibar with ALL of the information out there about it? Let me help you narrow it down just a little bit. ✈️ DO: Hire a boat for the day. We snorkelled along the reef as colourful fish swirled around us and went to a small sandbar in the middle of the ocean. Our guide cooked us a fresh seafood meal on a fire, complete with fish, lobster, squid, rice, curry, salad and fries; It was delicious. One of the most surreal moments was when high tide started coming in and the island began to DISAPPEAR! I was in awe; Kris and I were the last people on the island, each wave taking a smaller piece of it until we hopped on the boat and it disappeared completely. Our last adventure was exploring the mangroves, searching for one of the world’s most endangered primates; the Zanzibar red colobus monkey. We found a pair tucked away in the trees that were grooming each other! 🥂 EAT: If you love seafood, this is the place to be. Peace of mind is a unique place to eat; the chef hosts in his backyard garden and cooks some of the best local seafood in the area. Another great local place to eat is Pompetti restaurant. Located in a small strip of boutiques lies this well reviewed restaurant that specialized in Italian food. If you are looking for a great option but want a Seaview, the Lost Soles Bar is famous for it’s mouthwatering pizza. This is only the start of a great Zanzibar itinerary. When things don’t go to plan 🤷🏼♀️ Sometimes traveling does not go to plan, especially when you are up against nature. Kris and I had seen the photos splashed across the internet of the white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue water that lined Zanzibars beaches. 🌊 When we were planning our trip to Tanzania, ending on a beach was a no brainer for us. When we arrived at our hotel, it was late in the afternoon, we headed to the beach almost immediately and what we saw was not what we were expecting. There was a big outbreak of seaweed all along the beaches. One thing that is really important to us is the ocean/beach but you have to be able to adapt in these situations! We hired a boat and guide for the next morning and were able to swim and relax on some of the fluffiest white sand and aqua, clear blue water I have ever seen. My point is, travel is incredible and if something doesn’t work out the way you planned, something else will! We cannot predict what will happen, especially when it comes to forces of nature, but we can always experience something new, you never know where the path will take you! SERENGETI ✨ I remember watching National Geographic and seeing animals roaming free in the plains of the Serengeti. I said to myself; “One day I will travel to Tanzania and see the Serengeti for myself”. I have had friends and clients tell me about their experiences seeing wildlife in Africa for the first time, and how it made them emotional. There is something so spectacular about witnessing these wild creatures roam free. The key to really enjoying your journey through Tanzania, or anywhere really, is to ensure that you travel with the right company and that your itinerary is reflective of the experience that you want to have. Sometimes we get caught up in seeing everything possible (me included!) and then we feel a bit burnt out on our trip, or we do not get to experience the accommodation that we were so excited to stay at. Recently I had a client traveling through Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. A ✨DREAM COME TRUE✨ I first stubbled upon gorilla trekking 8 years ago, when I began my career as a Travel Agent. I remember thinking - one day, I will travel to Uganda or Rwanda and see these magical creatures in their natural habitat. Well … WE DID IT! ✈️🌍♥️ We chose Uganda (best decision ever!) and trekked in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. I love every bit of travel, but for me, there is something about being deep in a jungle, that makes me so incredibly happy. Bwindi is a stunning place, the views from the inside to the outside are like nothing I have seen before. I have been to many national parks, but Bwindi has my heart. 3 reasons to do your gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda 🦍 🇺🇬 Everyone who supports or works for this National Park are incredibly protective of the nature and animals that call this park home, especially the gorillas. There are so many programs in place to battle threats to the park, such as poachers The rangers and porters are so knowledgeable about anything and everything to do with Bwindi and it’s inhabitants The scenery that surrounds Bwindi is absolutely incredible, just the trek alone in the jungle was amazing! BUT the most magical part was when we finally found the gorillas. We hiked for 7 hours, and when our ranger said “we found the family”, I looked up and saw a black, hairy arm grabbing a tree branch. I completely forgot that I was hiking in tough terrain and almost impaled myself on a broken tree! Seeing the silverback gorilla family up close, and watching them in their natural habitat was a life changing and emotional moment. The perfect itinerary for your first time visiting Uganda ✈️🌍♥️ ✨ Entebbe: 1 day. Explore Lake Victoria, the worlds largest tropical lake before making your way through Kampala ✨ Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: 2 days. Bwindi is such an incredible place, definitely trek with the silverback gorillas and explore the area. If you have time, I would spend a bit more time in this area as I loved being surrounded by nature and the stunning views ✨ Queen Elizabeth National Park: 3 days. This area is full of many different animals, such as lions, elephants, buffalos and so much more. It is also home to the chimpanzee trek in the Kyambura Gorge, and the Kazinga Channel. We spent a total of 6 days in Uganda. I would suggest spending more time, closer to 10 days to explore the sights at a bit of a slower pace. We did a private tour through Uganda with @pearlnatureholidays - which was absolutely perfect! Let’s talk about travel right now! ✈️🌍 With staff shortages, fuel prices, cancellations, flight delays, airport chaos and lost luggage - how can you be prepared and enjoy your journey this summer? I think the biggest way to be able to enjoy your travel experience in the near future is to pack your patience. Airports are a bit chaotic right now, and if you are traveling, there is a chance (just like there has always been) that you could encounter an unpleasant situation. Having traveled in May and seeing the lines longer than I have ever seen them at Toronto Pearson, here are a few tips from a travel expert: ⋆ Be patient and do not take out your frustrations on the staff that have shown up to work; they cannot control what is happening right now! ⋆ Be prepared and arrive early! For international travel, arrive 3 hours before your flight, your airline or travel agent will also confirm this before your trip. ⋆ Checked bags - this is a big debate right now. I never check a bag, that’s just me. There is an issue with checked baggage being lost and misplaced right now, so if you are checking a bag, I would suggest apple AirTags, you can at least track you’re luggage yourself and know where it is. ⋆ Have travel insurance with trip cancellation, interruption, baggage loss etc., seriously, just buy it. ⋆ Fly out early in the morning, it seems like the later flights in the day are the ones that are delayed or cancelled, so flying out on an early morning flight seems to be a better option (if possible). ⋆ Book early! If you want to travel to a specific destination, hotel, with a particular airline, on a specific tour (group or private) etc., book earlier than you would have in the past. The travel surge is real and things are booking up quickly. ⋆ Check out your fast track options. Multiple credit cards have the added perk of lounge access and using a separate security line at the airport. OMG!! New beginnings are just around the corner. Yesterday I went into the grocery store for the first time in 2 years, without wearing a mask. Covid restrictions around the world are dropping faster than we can keep up! Travel has been very busy and availability is dwindling like I have never seen before. What is happening in the travel world right now? 🔆 Restrictions across the globe are dropping and entry requirements are changing - for the better! 🔆 Testing requirements have been removed to re-enter Canada, which is a huge relief for travelers (no more worrying about testing positive and being stuck in destination or having the financial burden of paying for testing) 🔆 Availability is low - I am not joking when I say this - across the Caribbean; throughout Europe - flights, transfers, hotels, tours are being snatched up at a rapid rate. I have never, in my almost 8 years in the industry, had to change client travel dates so many times because in the blink of an eye, it is gone (book early!!!) 🔆 Masks on planes - from what I have heard, for the most part, this may last a little bit longer 🔆 Vaccinations - for Canadians, in order to board a plane, you have to produce your vaccination passport - hopefully this won’t last too long, but for now, it is here to stay Where would you like to go next? BREAKING NEWS! 🚨 We have finally broken through a large barrier in the travel world! PCR TESTING IS NO LONGER REQUIRED! As of February 28: ✈ A PCR test is no longer required to enter Canada - an antigen test is acceptable that is taken within 24 hours prior to departure ✈ Children under 12 who are not vaccinated, but are traveling with a vaccinated parent, will no longer have to self isolate upon arrival back into Canada ✈ Random testing at the airport will still take place, however you will not have to self isolate while waiting for your results And possibly the most exciting news: ✈ The government has dropped the travel advisory from a level 3 to a level 2! Travel is getting BUSY! I have been booking a lot of clients who are ready to get back out and explore the world! I also have some exciting things brewing over here 👀 I’ve waited a while to reveal it because I’ve wanted everything to be perfect - but I am almost ready! Sayulita 🇲🇽 …was magical. While in #Mexico we visited the coastal village of #Sayulita and fell in love. Have you ever been somewhere and immediately knew that you could call that place home? That was Sayulita for us! As we peered out of the window of our taxi at the colourful shops and cobble stone streets, I could feel my heart begin to race. Our taxi stopped and we emerged into a crowd full of people. We had made friends at our resort and made the journey together. Sayulita is a vibrant place that is full of bars, clubs, restaurants, cafes, shops; all within walking distance of the beach. While there, I forgot about the chaos that the world is in and it felt like 2019 again. People talking, enjoying themselves and living life. People were respectful and aware of the virus, but still found a way to live their life! If you are visiting the #puertovallarta area, make sure you make time to visit Sayulita. Traveling during a pandemic 😷 🦠 Although traveling was different this time around, I couldn’t be happier that we were able to head to Mexico a few weeks ago. December 15, the government reintroduced the “avoid all non-essential travel” advisory - Kris and I left on December 16. I am currently writing about our experiences from start to finish in a detailed blog and highlighting the differences from a pre pandemic trip to traveling today! After our experience, I would definitely feel comfortable traveling again and I am really looking forward to a year full of new destinations and plans! IT IS OFFICIAL! 🎉🥳 The Canadian government has lifted the travel blanket that advised Canadians to avoid all non essential travel. After almost 19 months, people can begin to feel more comfortable about hopping on a plane and seeing the world again. There are still rules and restrictions in place, however, many destinations are making things very simple and accessible for international travellers in order to bring the travel industry and tourism back to the roaring success it once was. Most of us want to get back to our normal, bordering hopping selves! I am counting down the seconds until I can land in #mexico in December and have been keeping a close eye on every aspect of the trip. We are headed to #ottawa for the long weekend! It’s not my usual exotic place, but I am super excited. We traveled to Ottawa earlier this year to help a friend move, but we were unable to sightsee as we were in the middle of the pandemic and nothing had opened just yet so we helped move and came home. My husband thought it was hilarious as we drove around downtown on our way home and I ohhh’d and awwwww’d like a 5 year old. It was the first time I had been somewhere new since January 2020. I went to Ottawa when I was in grade 8 but barely remembered it! I never realized that Ottawa kind of looks like something out of Harry Potter! 🤓 With everything being open now, we are headed there to see some friends and explore the beautiful city! I’ll be finding the best restaurants and visiting all the touristy spots like parliament hill and trying to find some off the beaten path hidden gems! Our friend already has an amazing ramen place to show us! #hiddengems ✨ It was one of our first trips outside of Ontario in over a year. We drove to Fort Coulonge, #Quebec, a place I never would have visited if it wasn’t for my in-laws, and that would have been such a shame because it was beautiful! Did you know that right in the small town of Fort Coulonge there is a gorgeous area called the Parc des Chutes Coulonge Park. We felt as if we were somewhere exotic, walking through the trails, exploring the different layers of the park. Traveling off the beaten path has long been appealing to me and seeing what magic such a small place held, made me want to explore more #undiscovered destinations. My bucket list is full of the heavily trafficked, Instagram worthy places but I want to dive deeper and get lost in more untouched places. I am revamping my bucket list! I have always wanted to learn how to #sail and drive a #boat. #travelisback How will you travel post pandemic? ✈️🌍 This is something that has crossed my mind a lot lately. After our plans to move abroad last year were interrupted by the pandemic, we had to make some tough decisions. We bought a house in #bracebridge and now, with travel on the horizon, we are trying to realign our plans. Although we won’t be moving abroad just yet, how we want to travel has changed. We want to spend more time in different countries, really getting a feel for everyday life there. We want to slow down and stay in one place for a longer period of time and enjoy doing more of the things that we love. As we all dig out our bucket lists with the thrill of traveling to a new destination or revisiting an old love inches closer, I have been reminiscing about all of the beauty I have already been able to witness I cannot wait to be able to overload my social media and website with new and exciting content as traveling the world is going to soon become a reality But I will always cherish the life changing moments that I have already experienced The amazon was always a magical and mysterious place to me and when @borderjumperblake and I were able to visit, we jumped at the chance I will never forget these nights, floating down the amazonian river alongside pink dolphins as they blew bubbles to the surface. As I drove past #Pearsonairport the other night, I watched the sun set across the runway ☀️ It felt like it was a sign. A sign that the last year of bs is coming to an end, a sign that life was going to begin to change for the better, that travel was beginning to rebound.
